“I want to be spiritual, but I feel like I’m missing something”
Often, when talking spiritual discipline with people who aspire but struggle on the path, I hear them say they ‘can’t feel anything’. Often this lack of ‘something’ discourages them. What many feel that they need to correct is a lack of spiritual connection or rather, a connection to their spiritual power. This can manifest as feeling ‘spiritual numbness’ or like they ‘can’t feel’ what others feel, being disconnected from Nature or Ancestral spirits, or feeling like they are ‘just broken’ and missing some sort of link that allows others to receive connection, joy and response from their spiritual practice.
If this ‘disconnection’ or ‘lack’ goes deep enough, a person might end up carrying a kind of resentment towards spirituality, or spiritual people and their expressions of spiritual joy. Have you ever encountered this? For a long time, this was something I also struggled with, until I heard some very useful key advice: The nothing you feel is something.
Think of it this way. If your hand went completely numb, the awareness that your hand is numb is a meaningful connection to and response from your hand. It is telling you something. In this way, when our spiritual bodies are atrophied and you ‘can’t feel anything’…That ‘nothing’ is something. You are connected to your spiritual body.
Don’t judge your spiritual body. Accept it as it is. eventually you will notice…this emptiness is spacious. Through patient meditation and observation, you can deepen into it bit by bit.
This part of you needs healing and listening, and your gentle attention will heal it.
It’s really not uncommon for people to feel some kind of “block” when trying at first to access their spirituality. Sometimes it feels like you can’t make spirit contact, or like you’re “missing something” others have.
I want you to know that there is a way through this, and there is nothing wrong with you! Sitting with and accepting this space in you without judging it or expecting it to be different is the first step.
